Compensation for Music (Media) Sales exclusively in the United States remains complex and troublesome, splitting Revenue several ways according to: who is qualified to receive compensation, and the means in which the revenue is generated; comprising at least 42 different complex Revenue Streams to Composers and Musicians who may be loosely Categorized under:

 SONGWRITER AND COMPOSER REVENUE
PERFORMER AND RECORDING ARTIST REVENUE
SESSION MUSICIAN REVENUE
KNOWLEDGE OF CRAFT: TEACHING AND PRODUCING
BRAND-RELATED REVENUE
FAN, CORPORATE AND FOUNDATION FUNDING
ARTS ADMINISTRATOR
Entities receiving payment (not in any order): PUBLISHERS, SONGWRITERS, ARTISTS/BANDS, SOUND RECORDISTS, BACKGROUND SINGERS, BACKGROUND MUSICIANS, PERFORMERS, RECORD LABELS.
There are three types of Services or Uses:
  Broadcast Radio and Webcasting (RADIO), Digital Sales, and Interactive Streams.
There are three types of Labels or Rights Holders:
  Big Labels, Indie Labels, and Self Release.
RADIO… Terrestrial Radio, Streaming Services (Webcasting), and Satellite Radio pay through blanket licenses.

·Broadcast Radio (AM-FM Stations) does not pay ARTISTS/BANDS or Copyright Owners, only SONGWRITERS and PUBLISHERS through ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC.
·Webcasters (Pandora, Sirius-XM, NPR streaming, Live365, etc.) pays:
  SONGWRITERS and PUBLISHERS through ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC.
  Record Labels, Performers, Background Performers through the SOUND EXCHANGE.
DIGITAL SALES… iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, eMusic, etc., generate Revenue through the sale of sound recordings.

·Big Labels (Record Label) who:
  Compensate PUBLISHERS who then compensate SONGWRITERS.
  Compensate ARTISTS/BANDS through a Contract.
  Compensate SOUND RECORDISTS through a Special Payment Fund as a small percentage of sales.

·Indie Labels (Aggregator (IODA/The Orchard) pays 85% to Record Label) who:
  Compensate PUBLISHERS who then compensate SONGWRITERS at 9.1 cents per track.
  Compensate ARTISTS/BANDS typically at 50% of sale or other term of Contract.

·Self Release (Aggregator (CD Baby or TuneCore) pays 91 to 100% to ARTISTS/BANDS who pays the relevant PUBLISHER(S) who then pays the SONGWRITER(S); there may be other stipulations.
INTERACTIVE STREAMS (on demand stream)…Spotify, Rdio, Rhapsody, etc., pay Revenue for each occurrence of the stream of a sound recording.

·Big Labels (Record Label) who:
  Compensate SONGWRITERS and PUBLISHERS through ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC or the SONGWRITER through a  PUBLISHER.
  Compensate ARTISTS/BANDS through a Record Label by Contract.

·Indie Labels pays 85% to Record Label) who:
  Compensate SONGWRITERS and PUBLISHERS through PROs ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC or the SONGWRITER through PUBLISHER/Agent .
  Compensates through an Aggregator (IODA/The Orchard) to a Record Label who compensate the ARTISTS/BANDS typically at 50% of sale or other term of Contract.

·Self Release…
  Compensate SONGWRITERS and PUBLISHERS through PROs ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC or the SONGWRITER through PUBLISHER/Agent .
  Compensates through an Aggregator (IODA/The Orchard) to a Record Label who compensate the ARTISTS/BANDS typically at 50% of sale or other term of Contract.
